Are you strangling your tree?

Learning with Shanese

That hammock tied to your tree may be hurting it! Girdling happens when something is tied around the tree and the tree is not able to expand in that area as it grows. This is common when people tie something around the trunk of the tree or a branch and don’t loosen it as it grows. Last season I helped consult with a company that had multiple trees in their parking lot that were dying. The first thing I noticed was that all the trees were stabilized using guying anchors and wires. As the trees grew, no one loosened or removed the wires. With staffing change overs, no one noticed until it was too late. Most of the trees were dying and had to be removed. Remember to always check anything tied around your trees!!
