Did you know that branches do not get higher as the tree grows? A branch that is 5 feet off the ground will always be 5 feet off the ground. Trees grow from the tips. The tree will extend out and up by pushing out new growth at the tips. The base of the trunk only expands!
If you look closely at the branch, you can see where the current years growth started. This is especially easy in spruce trees as the new growth will be a lighter green.
In the photos below you can see a line where the new years growth started. The bark also looks different in this year’s growth compared to last year.
