Pine vs Spruce

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

Last summer I went with a coworker to assess the trees in a bunch of Kananaskis camp grounds. Along with a lot of walking, I learned a lot! Plus it was nice to get out of the office for a few days!!

It felt like I was looking at the same tree over and over. But I wasn't. They all had needles, but some were pine and some were spruce. So what is the difference? 🌲🌲🌲

A spruce tree has short round needles. When you take it between your fingers you can nicely roll it up and down. It also has only 1 needle per pore.

A pine tree has longer needles. They are about 2-3 inches long. Round on one side and flat on the other side. When you take one of these needles between your fingers they just flip over when you try to roll it. Pine trees have multiple needles coming out of each pore. The pine trees we looked at had 2 needles per pore. Some pine trees have more.
